The Spanish tapas chain Telefèric Barcelona has seven California locations — three in the Bay Area — but has spent nine years deliberately avoiding San Francisco, with co-owner Xavi Padrosa stating a preference for suburban markets.

Telefèric Barcelona — the Spanish tapas group co-founded by siblings Xavi and Maria Padrosa — has spent nine years expanding across California without once opening in San Francisco. It now operates seven California locations, including three in the Bay Area, with co-owner Xavi Padrosa explaining his strategy: "You'll never find one of our restaurants in the middle of San Francisco or Los Angeles. I love to go to the suburbs where people and families value different kinds of food," as he told the Sacramento Business Journal.

The Bay Area footprint runs through the suburbs. The first U.S. location opened in 2016 at 1500 Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Walnut Creek, on the second floor of a reclaimed brick-and-steel building. The space, which two early media reports cited as seating approximately 185, including the patio, bar, and private room, or 160 seats in another report, carries an average check of about $56 per person. Tapas currently range from $9 to $29, while paellas for two start around $42. The Palo Alto location, at 855 El Camino Real in Town & Country Village, followed in 2019 at roughly $65 per person. Los Gatos — 50 University Ave — is the third Bay Area address and the group's listed U.S. headquarters.

Each location is operated as its own LLC: TELEFERIC BARCELONA WC LLC holds the Walnut Creek ABC license; TELEFERIC BARCELONA PA LLC, filed with the California Secretary of State in October 2018, holds the Palo Alto license. The parent entity is Teleferic Barcelona Holding USA Corp, with Xavier Padrosa as CEO and registered agent. No Telefèric Barcelona entity appears in San Francisco's business registration records, and no ABC license application for the chain has been found in the city.

The rest of the California portfolio follows the same geographic logic: Los Angeles (Brentwood), Long Beach, and Roseville — which opened October 18, 2023, at The Fountains development with tapas from $12 to $22 — plus La Jolla, listed as "just opened" on the company's website. Newport Beach is "coming soon." At the Roseville opening, Padrosa told the Sacramento Bee: "Since opening our first U.S. restaurant in Walnut Creek a decade ago, Telefèric Barcelona has grown beyond anything we could have imagined."

The rooms are deliberately sized for private dining revenue — Walnut Creek's main dining room handles receptions for up to 125 — and average checks sit in the mid-$50s to mid-$60s range. That math works in a suburban downtown or a shopping village; it works less cleanly against San Francisco's rent and labor costs, where the same price point competes differently. Padrosa, who came to the Bay Area on a tennis scholarship at age 17, apparently knew which market he was building for.
