Shelley Lindgren's A16 group registered Lucania Hospitality LLC with the City on Aug. 1 at 1 Ferry Bldg Ste 36 — the ex-MarketBar space — for a full-service Southern Italian room built on Basilicata cooking, due this fall.

The team behind A16 is moving into the Ferry Building's former MarketBar space with Lucania, a full-service Southern Italian restaurant built around the cooking of Basilicata. A new entity, Lucania Hospitality LLC, registered with the City on Aug. 1 at 1 Ferry Bldg Ste 36, according to San Francisco business registrations — the same Suite 36 that MarketBar held from its 2003 registration until it went dark. Ownership is listed under the new Lucania entity rather than A16's D O C Restaurant Group.

A16, led by wine director and partner Shelley Lindgren, runs its Michelin-recognized flagship at 2355 Chestnut St in the Marina and the La Pala pizza counter. Lucania is billed as the group's first full-service expansion in years, and its return to the format after a run of smaller concepts, according to reporting on the opening.

The space runs roughly 3,000 square feet with a waterfront patio designed as an Italian piazza — heated and weather-protected for year-round service, per that reporting. The menu is set to lean on seafood (marinated anchovies, roasted sardines, steamed mussels) and regional pasta (cavatelli with Senise peppers, orecchiette with 'nduja).

An opening date has not been confirmed beyond a fall 2026 window; watch for the liquor-license filing and construction permits to narrow it. The move fills the Ferry Building's last vacancy, returning the marketplace to full occupancy for the first time since 2020 — a bet that all-day service still pencils out in a high-traffic transit hub on the Embarcadero.
