Stern Grove's eucalyptus, redwood, and oak canopy makes it one of the better urban birding spots in the city. This isn't a passive stroll — the count format means volunteers are actively logging species, so you'll be moving with purpose and learning to distinguish what you're hearing as much as what you're seeing. Bring binoculars if you have them; don't stress if you don't, since the guides typically have loaners or will spot for you.
The grove is free to enter. Nearest MUNI is the K/M/L Taraval lines to West Portal, then a short walk south on Sloat. Street parking on Wawona or Trocadero fills fast on weekend mornings — get there before 9am or take transit. No BART stop is close. Dogs are allowed in the grove but may not be welcome on a structured bird count; confirm with the organizers before bringing one.
