Good Morning, San Francisco

It's a gray one out there — scattered clouds, 55 degrees, humidity sitting at a damp 80% and a high that'll struggle to crack 57. Classic June gloom, the kind of morning that makes you wonder why you pay these rents. Today's big question: why can a city 20 miles south fix its downtown while we're still in committee?

San Mateo Cracked the Downtown Code. San Francisco Hasn't Even Picked Up the Phone.

Here's a story that should sting. When San Mateo decided to revive its downtown, it didn't wait for a state grant, a ballot measure, or a blue-ribbon task force. The merchants voted to tax themselves, the city closed B Street to cars, and roughly five years later that district counts about 600 businesses and a pedestrian corridor that other California cities are now studying like scripture. ABC7 this week literally called it a "playbook for other California cities."

And here's the part that should make every San Franciscan wince: San Mateo's mayor says he's never once discussed the approach with Mayor Daniel Lurie. The playbook exists. It's a half-hour drive away. Nobody from City Hall has asked to read it.

This is the whole problem in miniature. San Mateo's revival worked precisely because it wasn't run top-down — the businesses with skin in the game funded it and the city got out of the way. San Francisco does the opposite. We litigate every street redesign into oblivion, route it through a dozen agencies, hold the hearings, commission the studies, and end up with cones and indecision. The difference isn't money or talent. It's that one city trusts the people who actually run businesses on the street, and the other treats them as stakeholders to be managed.

You don't need a $200 million initiative to copy this. You need a phone call and the humility to admit someone smaller did it better. We'll see if Lurie makes it.

City Hall & Politics

KGO/ABC7 wants you to email the FCC. The Bay Area's ABC affiliate launched a viewer campaign this week urging people to file comments before a June 29 deadline, as Brendan Carr's FCC runs an unusual "early renewal" review of eight Disney-owned stations. Disney called it "unlawful, arbitrary and unconstitutional," and frankly the framing is hard to argue with — a license challenge rooted in White House grievance rather than regulatory precedent is exactly the kind of government muscle nobody should cheer, no matter who's holding the remote. You don't have to love legacy media to dislike the feds leaning on broadcasters they find annoying.

The Pride-cap saga finally folds. Eleven days after MLB warned three Giants pitchers that Bible verses on their caps "violated rules," Rob Manfred wrote Senator Josh Hawley to confirm nobody was disciplined and nobody will be — and that the real screwup was the Giants never telling players the caps were optional. So the warning was theater that evaporated the second a senator's letterhead showed up. Whatever your read on the verses, "rules" that dissolve on contact with political pressure were never rules at all.

Public Safety

A hazards warning that never reached the people in danger. Vanessa Bull and her 7-year-old were swept 100 feet into the surf at Baker Beach on June 19 — during an active National Weather Service Beach Hazards Statement she had no way of knowing about. Bystanders saved them; both survived. The National Park Service runs Baker Beach with no lifeguard towers and, apparently, no warnings visible enough to stop a mom from Sacramento walking her kids into sneaker waves. An alert that exists only in a database isn't a warning. It's paperwork. The least a managing agency owes visitors is a sign.

Housing & Transit

The $175 million seawall that might kill the beach it's near. The Coastal Commission approved a wall to protect the Ocean Beach sewage plant from erosion, but four researchers preparing to publish say it could leave us with concrete and no beach behind it. It's the eternal infrastructure trap — spend nine figures to defend a plant in the wrong spot, and risk paying to erase a public beach in the process. Before that money moves, somebody should be very sure the fix isn't worse than the problem.

Tech & Startups

Muon Space opened a 130,000-square-foot satellite factory in San Jose — ten times its old footprint, with claims of 500-satellites-a-year capacity from a four-year-old company that's built eight total. Bold, and exactly the kind of private bet-on-yourself the Bay does best. We'll be curious to see the output match the cleanroom square footage.

JetBlue got sued over "surveillance pricing." A class action says the airline used behavioral data to set individualized fares — and named PROS Holdings, the same vendor the FTC already subpoenaed. Charging you more because the software senses you're desperate isn't dynamic pricing, it's a black box rifling through your browsing habits. California just passed a law for exactly this; the AG should actually use it.

Culture & Food

Paramount Movie Classics are back in Oakland — Friday-night 35mm screenings, $10, all ages, with a fully restored Mighty Wurlitzer warming up the room at 6:30. Ten bucks for a film in one of the most gorgeous Art Deco halls on the West Coast is the rare deal that's actually a deal.

Oaktown Thursdays brings a free monthly block party to Telegraph Avenue near Latham Square — third Thursday, 5–9 PM, through October. The June debut pulled 36 vendors, DJs, a bar crawl, and, yes, actual street wrestling. No ticket, no wristband. Next one's July 16.

The Berkeley Flea Market turned its own office into a store. Its nonprofit operator converted the old admin room at 1937 Ashby into a three-day-a-week consignment shop where vendors keep 80 cents on the dollar — a scrappy hedge against a parking-lot lease that can be canceled in 30 days. That's small-business survival instinct, and we're rooting for it.

One More Thing

The 26th Bicycle Film Festival rolls into Gray Area on Mission this Saturday — three back-to-back programs of cinematic, adventure, and urban cycling shorts, $22 a block or $35 for the whole day. In a city that can't decide what to do with its streets, spending an afternoon watching people who clearly love them feels like the right kind of protest.
