Bay Area DJ institution True Skool brings Renoir aka Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist to Golden Ratio for a new monthly dance series built on soulful-house and disco-house — free before 10pm on July 3.

True Skool — the Bay Area hip-hop and soul events platform Renoir founded in 1999 — is launching a new monthly party called Elevation, and the first installment lands on holiday-weekend Friday, July 3, at Golden Ratio, 1517 Franklin St., Oakland. Doors at 9pm. 21+.

Renoir, known in the DJ world as Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist, is the one behind the decks and the one who shaped the night's sound: soulful-house, disco-house, and global soul — a deliberate departure from the hip-hop roots True Skool built its name on. Over the years he's shared billings with Jazzy Jeff, Z-Trip, Q-Bert, and Wu-Tang Clan; this is him doing the room he wants to do. Special guests Cali and Proof round out the lineup.

Price: free before 10pm. RSVP at the True Skool event page and you're free before 11pm. The listing doesn't publish a door price after that, so treat free-before-10 as the real ticket. BART to 12th Street/Oakland City Hall drops you half a block from Franklin.

Go early, RSVP anyway, and be in the room by 9:30. A free dance night with actual pedigree behind it on a holiday Friday is not the kind of thing that stays quiet all night.
