The USS Hornet museum in Alameda is throwing a Steel Beach BBQ on July 4th — live music, food, free island tours, and a reason to skip the predictable SF crowds on America's 250th birthday.
Saturday, July 4 · 10 AM–5 PM · USS Hornet Museum, 707 W Hornet Ave, Alameda · $39 via Eventbrite · All ages · Free parking
The USS Hornet — the Essex-class carrier that survived WWII and fished Apollo astronauts out of the Pacific — is hosting a Steel Beach BBQ on the flight deck this July 4th. That's the Navy's term for an outdoor party on the ship, and it's about as good a setting as the Bay Area offers for a holiday that happens to be America's 250th birthday.
Two live acts are confirmed: Swingin' Blue Stars and King Tide Players, playing throughout the day on the deck. Food and drinks are available for purchase. On the pier alongside the ship, arts and crafts vendors have free entry — you don't need a ticket to browse the waterfront. Ticket admission gets you inside: island tours are free on the day (normally $12 extra), and the entire hangar bay and second deck are open for self-guided touring, including the Apollo Block I command capsule, the Mobile Quarantine Facility, the Sea King helicopter used in filming Apollo 13, and the museum's newest acquisition, an F/A-18C.
Logistics: Drive — there's free parking on site, and the Hornet is not walkable from any BART station. Bikers can cross from Oakland via the Park Street or Fruitvale Avenue bridges. No fireworks at the Hornet itself; the event closes at 5 PM, leaving time to reposition for wherever you're watching the show.
The Alameda Fourth of July Parade runs in the morning along Park Street; the Hornet makes a natural next stop. If you're doing both, give yourself 20 minutes to drive or bike across the island after the parade clears.
