The East Bay’s Fourth of July landscape splits sharply this year: Alameda throws what it bills as the longest July 4 parade in the nation, while Berkeley and Oakland have no city-sponsored fireworks or festivals — fireworks are illegal in both cities and all East Bay Regional Parks.

Alameda’s parade marks the U.S. 250th birthday and the Alameda Fire Department’s 150th anniversary, with 150 entries and an expected 60,000 spectators along the 3.3-mile route. A 5K run at 8:30 a.m. benefits Midway Shelter for Women and Children. Honorary Grand Marshal is Congresswoman Lateefah Simon; Fire Chief Nick Luby and the fire department serve as Grand Marshals.

If you want a more curated, old-timey vibe, the Pardee Home Museum hosts a 1900s-themed patriotic picnic with period games, live music, and historic tours. Tickets include admission and activities.

What to know about the bans: All fireworks — including “safe and sane” — are prohibited in Berkeley, Oakland, unincorporated Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and East Bay Regional Parks. Berkeley hillside roads (Grizzly Peak Blvd, Panoramic Way, Prospect St.) restrict non-resident access July 4 due to fire risk; Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Botanical Garden, and Tilden Steam Train are closed.

Insider tip: For a free, low-key alternative, Rhythmix Cultural Works presents free outdoor world music, Taiko, and circus arts in Alameda parks as part of its summer series. Or drive to Pleasanton, Moraga, Martinez, or Concord for traditional fireworks shows.
