SFMOMA and SFFILM host a free family screening of two Snoopy specials with a Schulz Studio Q&A, then a paper-folding studio, Sunday, Aug. 2. The film is free but needs an advance RSVP and seating is first-come.

What, when, where: "Dog Day of Summer," a free family film screening plus art activity, Sunday, Aug. 2, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at SFMOMA, 151 Third St., San Francisco, in SoMa. The film runs in the Phyllis Wattis Theater on Floor 1; the art activity is upstairs in the new Co-Lab studio on Floor 5.

Here's the part that decides whether you get in: the screening is free and open to the public — no museum ticket required — but you need an advance RSVP, and seating is limited, first-come, first-served. Reserve it now through SFMOMA's event page, not the morning of.

The program. At 11 a.m., SFMOMA and SFFILM screen two Peanuts pieces: the special Snoopy Presents: There's No Place Like Home, Snoopy, and the first episode of Camp Snoopy. At 12:30 p.m., there's a Q&A with Mary Valencia-Shyne, associate art director at Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates in Sonoma County and a design consultant on Camp Snoopy — a rare chance for kids to hear from someone who actually draws Snoopy for a living. From 1 to 3 p.m., the Co-Lab studio runs a Snoopy-inspired paper-folding activity.

The money detail parents care about. The film costs nothing. The Floor 5 art activity is free with a museum ticket for adults — and children 18 and under always get into SFMOMA free. So if you're bringing kids and skipping the galleries, the whole outing can be genuinely free; one adult ticket covers a grown-up who wants to do the folding table too.

Getting there. SFMOMA is a two-block walk from Montgomery Street BART/Muni, which is the move — parking in this stretch of SoMa on a weekend is a hassle and a cost you don't need. If you do drive, the Jessie Square garage under Yerba Buena Lane is the closest.

If you've only got the late slot: skip the screening and come for the 1 p.m. art activity — Co-Lab is a new, purpose-built family studio and the paper-folding project is the hands-on payoff, no RSVP needed for that part. But if the kids are Peanuts-obsessed, the Q&A at 12:30 is the actual draw, and that one you have to reserve ahead.
