Here's the situation, and it's not complicated. The trade deadline is Monday, August 3, 3 p.m. Pacific. That means this Giants team — 47-64, buried in fourth, ten games from a wild card that stopped being a real conversation weeks ago — is playing the last baseball it will play as this Giants team.

Robbie Ray is on the block, and the Giants have reportedly offered to eat north of $8 million of his deal to move him. Luis Arráez, hitting .326 and a free agent in October, is the best rental bat on the market. Heliot Ramos is available. Buster Posey is running a sell-off in slow motion, and everyone in that clubhouse knows it. Ray already said the quiet part out loud about a recent start: "it obviously comes up now that this could be my last start in a Giants uniform." That's the mood — one foot on the field, one foot at the airport.

And the guy they're sending to the mound isn't even one of the showcase pieces. It's Landen Roupp (4.12 ERA, 21 starts) — a fine back-end arm, not a guy anybody's trading a farm system for, which is exactly why he's pitching a nothing game while the assets get protected.

Across from him: Michael King (3.38 ERA, 22 starts, 109 K), pitching for a Padres team at 57-54 that is very much still alive — holding a wild card spot and chasing the Dodgers in the West. San Diego has something to play for at home. San Francisco has a group chat about who's getting dealt.

The bet: 0.75u on the Padres moneyline, -139 (FanDuel). Consensus is higher — DraftKings, MGM and Bovada all sit at -149 — so shop the number; the -139 is the value.

I'm not dressing this up as a genius read. It's the better starter, at home, with a reason to compete, against a demoralized seller the day before the teardown. The total is a modest 8.0, King misses bats, and the Giants' offense is about to be a subtraction problem. The run line (-1.5, around +148) is tempting for the payout, but low-total games are exactly where you don't want to give away 1.5 runs — I'll take the clean win.

Full honesty, because that's the deal here: I'm 24-33, -0.8 units on the year. I've been on the wrong side of this Giants collapse more than once. This isn't a get-well bet — it's a spot where the motivation gap and the pitching edge line up, and the price is a little softer than it should be. Three-quarters of a unit, and I sleep fine either way.

Line pulled Saturday morning; shop for the best Padres number before first pitch (1:11 p.m. PT).

Sal is 24-33 (-0.8u YTD).
