Funky Elephant closes its Mission District location after less than two years, part of ongoing volatility in San Francisco's Thai restaurant scene.

Funky Elephant, the acclaimed Thai restaurant, closed its Mission District location in June after less than two years on Valencia Street.

The restaurant, registered with the City as Funky Group LLC at 1270 Valencia St, opened March 1, 2023. Chef Supasit Puttikaew operated the room, which had earned critical attention for its regional Thai cooking.

No official reason was given for the closure, which comes amid a volatile period for San Francisco's Thai food scene. New Thai Elephant in North Beach was shut down in March for severe health violations, and the Slanted Door Group's Mission Commissary temporarily closed in June due to a rodent infestation before reopening the same day.

The Mission corridor continues to test restaurant operators, with Funky Elephant's departure removing one of the neighborhood's higher-profile Thai concepts. The space at 1270 Valencia Street now joins the roster of recently vacated rooms along the corridor.
