The San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee has set August 26 as the date to vote on its District 8 supervisor endorsement — a race already shadowed by a sexual assault allegation against leading candidate Manny Yekutiel.

The endorsement process also includes Nancy Pelosi aide Gary McCoy and attorney Michael Nguyen. Party members must now decide whether to back Yekutiel, who denies the allegations, even as the independent investigation mandated by the DCCC's own internal reforms may not be complete by vote day.

The San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee (DCCC) will hold its District 8 supervisor endorsement vote on August 26, the SF Standard reported Sunday. The race includes Manny Yekutiel, Nancy Pelosi aide Gary McCoy, and attorney Michael Nguyen.

The candidacy of Yekutiel — a Mayor Daniel Lurie ally and owner of the Mission political café Manny's — has been shadowed by a sexual assault allegation from political activist Brad Chapin. Chapin says the incident occurred in 2020. The Dissent reported in July that SFPD had opened an investigation. A police report had been filed in April.

The SF Standard reported that the DCCC had previously postponed its District 8 endorsement vote. The party's new calendar sets August 14 as the application deadline and August 22 for candidate interviews. Endorsements Committee Chair Michela Alioto-Pier confirmed the dates and noted a new condition: candidates must complete sexual assault advocacy training to be eligible for an endorsement.

"Please explain what you have done, and what you will do, to support survivors of sexual harassment and assault," Alioto-Pier told the Standard, describing a question all D8 endorsement candidates will face.

DCCC Chair Nancy Tung told the Standard that the party's independent ombudsperson investigation remained ongoing. Asked whether the inquiry would be complete before the August 26 vote, Tung said, "I certainly hope so," adding she was not privy to how the investigation was proceeding. "Sexual harassment and assault have been important issues discussed at the DCCC and has included adoption of our local Code of Conduct on this issue," Tung added.

Chapin told the Standard he had reported the incident to the party's sexual assault hotline but did not hear back. The Dissent's July 13 reporting found the DCCC hotline had sat silent for months before party leadership learned of the lapse.

Despite the allegation, sources close to the party told the Standard that Yekutiel remains a favorite among the DCCC's 32 voting members. Mayor Lurie has said he has no plans to back anyone in the D8 or D10 races for now — a posture one source described to the Standard as "a very savvy political tactic" that nonetheless leaves voters "without much of a sense of who he is or what he wants to do."
