BART runs direct from SFO's International Terminal to Embarcadero Station in about 32 minutes — no transfer required during daytime hours, trains every 5–12 minutes, fare approximately $9–$12 each way (distance-based; pay with a Clipper card for a 6.25% discount, or tap any contactless card or phone). From the station exit, the Ferry Building is one block north. Land at 9:30 a.m., catch the train by 9:45, and you're standing at the waterfront by 10:20.

The walk

The Embarcadero promenade north of the Ferry Building is your first hour if a camera is the reason you left the terminal. The Bay Bridge reads well from the water's edge, and the Ferry Building itself — 1 Ferry Building, Embarcadero at Market Street — is an 1898 Beaux-Arts terminal whose interior Grand Nave runs its full length and frames the bay through arched windows at either end.

From there, walk north along the Embarcadero to Broadway, then cut up Columbus Avenue into North Beach. City Lights Bookstore (261 Columbus Ave) and the short alleys off Vallejo and Green streets have compressed, layered texture that photographs well in the mid-morning. Push another 10 minutes into Chinatown's Waverly Place — painted balconies, paper lanterns, manageable crowds. Round-trip from the Ferry Building to City Lights and back runs roughly 3–4 miles and about two hours with stops.

The Ferry Building's tenants skew toward sit-down dining and specialty food. Hog Island Oyster Co. and Cowgirl Creamery are the two anchor names on the ground floor. A 7:40 p.m. flight means clearing SFO security by 5:30 p.m. Catch BART from Embarcadero no later than 4:55 p.m. The 32-minute ride gets you to the SFO terminal by 5:30. That leaves roughly 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. of usable city time — over six hours. Set a phone alarm for 4:45 and stop watching the clock until it goes off.
