Three established East Bay restaurants—Zing Cafe in Berkeley, Sam's Doghouse in El Sobrante, and Yammy Sushi in El Cerrito—have closed, removing neighborhood institutions that together served for over 60 years.

Three East Bay restaurants have closed, taking decades of neighborhood service with them.

Zing Cafe at 3051 Adeline St. Ste. B in Berkeley has gone dark, with its signage painted over. The cafe, which opened in early 2015 in a 1923 storybook-style building near Ashby BART, served coffee, salads, sandwiches and pastries. The space was previously home to Marmot Mountain Works.

Sam's Doghouse in El Sobrante closed after 42 years at 3857 San Pablo Dam Rd. The hot dog and milkshake specialist operated as Sam's Doghouse Inc., with Mike Nelson Rowland as the designated corporate officer. The owners thanked patrons in a farewell, calling the spot "a gathering place" and "a family tradition."

Yammy Sushi at 195 El Cerrito Plaza has also closed, according to reader reports. The restaurant served rolls, nigiri, bentos and noodle soups in the shopping center complex.

All three closures were reported by tipsters and confirmed by site visits or reader submissions, with no formal announcements from the operators.
