Jan Koum, the billionaire co-founder of WhatsApp, has dropped a cool $250,000 into a PAC aligned with Mayor Daniel Lurie's policy agenda. And because Koum has also donated to Republican and MAGA-associated causes, the San Francisco political establishment is doing what it does best: having a meltdown over who's writing the checks instead of asking what the money is actually being spent on.

Let's be clear about a few things.

First, wealthy donors funding PACs connected to elected officials is not new. It's not unique to Lurie, and it wasn't invented by conservatives. San Francisco's progressive nonprofits and supervisors have been swimming in dark money and activist-linked PAC dollars for years. The selective outrage is, as always, exhausting.

Second, the "MAGA" label is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Koum is a tech billionaire who immigrated from Ukraine and built one of the most-used communication platforms on earth. The man donates across the political spectrum. Slapping a scarlet letter on anyone who's ever given money to a Republican is exactly the kind of purity-test politics that makes San Francisco insufferable to anyone who doesn't march in ideological lockstep.

The real question — the one nobody seems interested in asking — is what this PAC is actually spending money on. If it's pushing for safer streets, cleaner neighborhoods, and a city government that occasionally functions like it belongs in a first-world country, then frankly, we don't care if the check comes from a MAGA donor, a Bernie Bro, or a sentient sourdough starter.

Money in politics is worth scrutinizing. Always. But scrutiny means following the dollars to outcomes, not just playing guilt-by-association. If Lurie's PAC is advancing policies that make San Francisco more livable and fiscally sound, that matters infinitely more than the donor's voter registration.

Judge the policy. Follow the money. Skip the hysteria.
