They actually track outcomes. In a city where billions in public spending on homelessness has produced… well, gestures broadly at the Tenderloin… a private charity that demands accountability from its grantees is practically revolutionary.

Now, the eyebrow. Forty-two million dollars is a breathtaking sum to raise over cocktails and celebrity sightings. It's the kind of money that makes you wonder: if the private sector can mobilize this much capital in a single evening, voluntarily, what exactly is City Hall's excuse for chronic underperformance on the same issues?

San Francisco's annual budget clocks in north of $14 billion — roughly 333 Tipping Point galas stacked on top of each other. And yet the city's poverty, homelessness, and public safety crises persist at levels that would embarrass most major American cities. The contrast between one charity night's efficiency and an entire municipal government's bloat is, frankly, damning.

We're not naive enough to think charity galas alone can fix systemic poverty.
