The North Face closed its only San Francisco location — 180 Post St. in Union Square — on March 31, 2024. The departure wasn't a strategic retreat: landlord Grosvenor requested an early lease termination to hand the space to Bulgari, the Italian luxury jeweler, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The North Face agreed to the early exit without offering its own public rationale; the financial terms of the break were not disclosed.

The Berkeley outlet store has not closed. KRON4 and CBS News San Francisco confirmed at the time that the location remains open, alongside stores in Walnut Creek, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, Milpitas, and Livermore. A thread posted to r/sanfrancisco on July 24, 2026 suggested both the SF and Berkeley stores had shuttered — the SF part is accurate, the Berkeley part is not.

"The North Face was born in San Francisco, and we have cherished the time spent here," spokesperson Hailey Albright said in March 2024. VF Corporation, The North Face's parent, has not announced plans for a new San Francisco location; the company's most recent quarterly earnings report, covering the period through June 28, 2025, contains no mention of Bay Area retail strategy. The brand was founded in 1966 at 308 Columbus Ave. in North Beach — roughly two miles from the store that is now being outfitted for Bulgari.
