A 6,200-square-foot food hall at Presidio Tunnel Tops opens Saturday — three fast-casual concepts, a bar, a café and a market splitting one kitchen. The bet: be a tourist destination and a neighborhood room at once.

The Mess Hall opens Saturday, Aug. 15, at 201 Halleck St. in the Presidio, dropping three fast-casual restaurants, a bar, a daytime café and a market into a single 6,200-square-foot restored Army building near Tunnel Tops. The rooms share one kitchen and one ordering system — a food-hall economics play that lets a handful of concepts split the labor and the back-of-house that would sink any one of them alone.

The operating company is Presidio Mess Hall, L.L.C., led by Rob Gaon, a Bay Area resident and principal of The Mess Hall Group, with Nate Israel, the concept developer, serving as director of operations. The Presidio Trust announced the long-term lease for the 201 Halleck space in July 2024, calling it the largest and final food-and-beverage project slated for Tunnel Tops. Spearheading culinary development across the concepts is Peter Serpico, a Momofuku alum who was opening chef at Momofuku Ko — named the James Beard Foundation's Best New Restaurant in 2009 — before running his own Philadelphia restaurants. The Trust's announcement named Zach Negin, owner of Tabula Rasa in Los Angeles and a partner in San Francisco's Dolores Deluxe, as the curator of the bar. Studio KDA, the firm behind Bar Panisse and Lunette, designed the space, and the Chronicle, which first reported the Aug. 15 date, tapped Balboa Street bakery Breadbelly for the pastry program.

The building itself is the bet. It carries wraparound views toward the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the city skyline, and it sits in a national park that has drawn more than three million visitors to Tunnel Tops since 2022 — while roughly 8,000 people live inside the Presidio's gates.

That split is the whole gamble. A destination food hall lives on tourist traffic; a neighborhood one lives on the people who come back on a Tuesday. Under one roof and one kitchen, The Mess Hall is betting it can be both.
