The work is real and documented — at Muttville's grooming salon at 750 Florida Street and at Oakland Animal Services — even if the caption's adjectives outrun what the shelters actually say.

A post on r/bayarea this week — nearly 300 upvotes — introduces "a Bay Area angel" named Cindy, a groomer the caption says gives senior dogs makeovers, for free, to raise their odds of finding a home. It's a warm framing. The place the work actually happens is more specific than the caption lets on.

Cindy Perry is a volunteer groomer at Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, which since late August 2024 has occupied a three-building estate at 750 Florida Street, on the Mission–Potrero line. The grooming happens in a room the shelter calls the Wilsey's Glam Shampoochery — dog-print wallpaper, a wash station — where, in 7x7's account of the new facility, new arrivals "get their glow-up after a visit to the vet." A 7x7 photo from that piece, credited to Michael Joy, shows Perry at the bench doing exactly that. She also turns up on Oakland Animal Services' volunteer page, where the shelter files her grooming clips under "Trans-fur-mations."

The Reddit caption's adjectives are harder to stand behind than the work itself. Muttville and Oakland Animal Services identify Perry as a volunteer groomer; neither uses the "self-taught" label the post leans on, and her Oakland role is described as small-dog grooming, not strictly senior work. What's documented is the volunteering — and the reason a shelter bothers with a grooming bench at all.

That reason is adoptability. Muttville takes dogs aged seven and up — the ones that, as founder Sherri Franklin has put it, often languish for months before being put down for no reason but age. The organization says it spends roughly $1,600 per dog on veterinary work before adoption and expects to move close to 1,300 dogs this year. A haircut is the cheap, visible end of that pipeline: the step between a matted stray and a photo someone actually clicks on.

Walk into 750 Florida Street six days a week, 10 to 5, and the bench is part of the tour — same as the donated couches, the cageless run of the place, and the mason jar of extracted teeth Franklin keeps in the clinic. The clip made one groomer briefly famous. The salon was already there.
