If you've ever lived in Canada — or even just visited Vancouver and wandered into a T&T Supermarket — you already know why this is exciting news. Signs have gone up at the Target West Shopping Center confirming that T&T Supermarket is setting up shop in San Francisco.
For the uninitiated, T&T is a Canadian-based Asian supermarket chain owned by Loblaw Companies. Think: pristine produce sections, an enormous selection of Asian groceries, a hot food bar that actually slaps, and a bakery that could make you forget about your neighborhood's overpriced artisan bread. It's basically what happens when someone takes the Asian grocery store experience and gives it a Whole Foods-level polish — without the Whole Foods-level markup on everything.
One SF resident who previously lived in Canada could barely contain their excitement: "I lived in Canada for a few years and loved this store. So excited to shop here when it opens!"
From a fiscal perspective, this is exactly the kind of private investment we love to see. No taxpayer subsidies needed, no five-year city approval saga (that we know of) — just a business identifying demand and filling it. San Francisco's food scene is already legendary, but our grocery options, especially for quality Asian ingredients at reasonable prices, have had some gaps. More competition in the grocery space means better prices and better selection for consumers. That's Econ 101, and it actually works when you let the market do its thing.
The Target West Shopping Center location also makes practical sense — it's an established retail hub with foot traffic and parking, two things that can make or break a grocery store in this city.
No official opening date has been announced yet, but if T&T delivers even half of what it's known for up north, this could quickly become one of the most popular grocery destinations in the city. We'll be watching — and probably first in line at the bakery counter.
