A two-story house at 958 Kingwood St. in Santa Rosa burned Thursday afternoon; all six residents got out, the home was red-tagged, and neighbors reported hearing explosions in the backyard before the flames took hold.

The call came in just before 3 p.m. Thursday: a house fire at 958 Kingwood St. in Santa Rosa. When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flame were pushing from both floors of the two-story, single-family home, according to the Santa Rosa Fire Department, whose account was reported by SFGATE and Bay City News.

All six residents — five adults and one child — were already out. The department said a search of the house confirmed everyone had escaped before firefighters got there. All six had been home when the fire started, and told officials they heard explosions coming from the backyard before it took hold.

The blaze pressed close enough to the neighbors that the houses on either side took radiant-heat damage to their exterior walls, though the department said the interiors were spared. The affected home did not fare as well: the damage was extensive enough that it was red-tagged and deemed unfit for occupancy. The Red Cross is assisting the six displaced residents.

A cause has not been released. What remains on Kingwood Street is a red tag on the door of a two-story house the department says no one can live in.
