A woman on a private electric scooter died Friday morning at Market and 5th, a few feet from the Powell Street BART and Muni station, after her wheel caught in a flush streetcar rail and she was struck by a commercial box truck, a witness and SFPD told ABC7.

The stretch of Market between 5th and Powell is one of the most trafficked few hundred feet in San Francisco — streetcar rails run its length, delivery trucks work the curb, and riders on scooters and bikes thread across the painted lanes a few steps from the mouth of the Powell Street BART and Muni station. On Friday morning it was closed off with police tape while SFPD worked a fatal crash.

A woman riding an electric stand-up scooter was killed shortly before 8:30 a.m. near Market and 5th, the San Francisco Police Department told ABC7. A witness who was also on a scooter told the station he watched the woman's tire catch in one of the train tracks embedded in the roadway; she went down and was run over by a box truck. Police said the vehicle involved was a commercial truck and that they had located the driver.

The scooter appeared to be private, not a rental, ABC7 reported, and a helmet was seen on the ground near the crash. SFPD offered no theory beyond caution. "Operating any vehicle and traveling on our streets, there is always inherent danger," officer Robert Rueca told the station, urging riders and pedestrians to stay aware of vehicles and obstacles.

The flush rails that run the length of Market are a known hazard for narrow wheels, and this block funnels scooters, bikes, buses, and trucks over the same grooved lanes every rush hour. By midday the tape was down and the corner was moving again — the tracks still set into the asphalt where the crash happened.
