The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is implementing two weekends of T Third light rail service disruptions for maintenance, utilizing bus shuttles for affected segments. However, a previously reported figure of '14% travel time improvement' is not supported by official agency statements or project documentation.

Beginning this weekend, SFMTA crews will undertake critical infrastructure repairs along the T Third light rail line, affecting service through two 'Fix It! Weekends.' While SFMTA confirms improvements from related projects have reduced travel times by several minutes, claims of a '14% overall improvement' circulated in some initial reports appear to be unsubstantiated by the agency's own public records.

The SFMTA has announced two consecutive 'Fix It! Weekends' on the T Third light rail line, aiming to repair aging infrastructure and improve boarding platforms. The first maintenance period is scheduled for July 18–19, 2026, with the second following on July 25–26, 2026.

During the initial weekend, July 18–19, bus shuttles will replace train service between 3rd St & Evans Ave and Bayshore Blvd & Sunnydale Ave. Riders traveling north will transfer to T Third trains continuing to Chinatown-Rose Pak Station at 3rd St & Marin St.

For the second weekend, July 25–26, buses will operate between Armstrong and Sunnydale, with transfers available at 3rd St & Williams Ave. SFMTA states that these service changes are designed to minimize disruptions while maintenance crews work. Bus shuttles will run from 6 a.m. to midnight on both Saturdays and Sundays.

SFMTA confirms that multiple divisions, including Track Maintenance, Overhead Lines, Signals, Motive Power, and Engineering, are involved in these 'Fix It! Weekends' as part of the broader 'T Third Improvements' project. This larger initiative aims to enhance the overall reliability and efficiency of the T Third line, which was identified as a critical community priority in the 2020 Bayview Community-Based Transportation Plan.

Crucially, while some initial media reports mentioned a '14% travel time improvement,' official SFMTA documentation does not corroborate this figure. The agency's records regarding the T Third Improvements project indicate that completed signal timing and transit signal priority upgrades (Phases 1 and 2) have resulted in 'up to 7 minutes saved roundtrip during weekday evenings' and 'up to 6 minutes on weekends.' These improvements are distinct from the physical repairs being conducted during the 'Fix It! Weekends,' and the 14% figure could not be traced to any SFMTA source.

According to SFMTA, 'To safely complete this work, T Third Street train service will be temporarily replaced by the T Third Street Bus service in some areas during the two scheduled Fix It! weekends.' The agency also noted that 'In the second half of 2026, our team plans to start Phase 3. This phase will improve traffic signal timing along the rest of the line in the Bayview and Visitation Valley.'

The coordinated efforts of various SFMTA teams are cited as making such 'Fix-It! Weekends' a success, upholding safety standards and addressing critical repairs, as stated by the agency.
