If you were planning to head east across the Bay this weekend, we have some unfortunate news: I-80 eastbound is closed.

Caltrans scheduled the closure for Friday night, and if you've driven anywhere near the Bay Bridge corridor since then, you already know the ripple effects are real. The closure is part of ongoing maintenance work — the kind of infrastructure investment that's necessary but always seems to land at the most inconvenient possible time.

As one Bay Area commuter put it bluntly: "This is going to deadlock the Bay Bridge all weekend."

Hard to argue with that assessment. The Bay Bridge already operates near capacity on a normal weekend, and funneling eastbound traffic through detours is a recipe for the kind of gridlock that makes you question every life decision that led you to own a car in this region.

What's frustrating isn't the maintenance itself — nobody wants crumbling highways. It's the communication. There was apparent confusion among some residents about exactly when the closure would begin, with conflicting reports circulating about whether it started a night early. One SF resident noted that "every single bit of news coverage or information Caltrans has ever put out" pointed to a Friday night closure, yet people were still caught off guard. When a government agency can't clearly communicate a major highway shutdown — something they planned well in advance — that's a problem.

This is Infrastructure Management 101: tell people what's happening, when it's happening, and what their alternatives are. Caltrans has gotten better at this over the years, but "better" and "good" are two very different things.

If you absolutely need to get across the Bay this weekend, give yourself extra time, consider BART, or just stay put. Your blood pressure will thank you.
