California's Great America is not closing this year. The park is in its 50th anniversary season and open on weekends through at least Labor Day — here's the actual logistics.
People keep showing up at California's Great America for a "last hurrah," and the park keeps being open. Bay Area social media has been writing the obituary for months, but the 50th anniversary season is running on weekends right now, and the park almost certainly won't take its final bow until after the 2027 season.
Here's what's actually happening: Six Flags CFO Brian Witherow disclosed at the company's May 2025 Investor Day that without a lease extension — which he called "incredibly unlikely" — the park's last year of operation would be after the 2027 season. Prologis bought the 112-acre Santa Clara site for $310 million in 2022 and holds the lease through approximately June 2028. No WARN Act notices have been filed. No final date announced. The park is selling tickets, including a July 4 Star-Spangled Night with fireworks at 9:40 p.m.
The logistics: California's Great America, 4701 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara. Current summer hours: Saturday 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. South Bay Shores waterpark is included with admission; daily ticket prices vary by date — check sixflags.com/cagreatamerica for same-week rates, which run lower than gate. Nearest Caltrain: Santa Clara station, about a mile away. VTA Route 60 runs directly to the park. Driving: I-101 to Great America Parkway; on-site parking available.
The insider move: Sunday opens at the same time as Saturday but closes two hours earlier — meaning fewer people show up expecting a full day, and lines are shorter in the morning. If the nostalgia itch is real, the 10 a.m. rope drop on Sunday is the play. You'll have time to hit the major coasters and still make it home for dinner.
