This is one of the more unusual free-ish afternoons the garden puts on. Gamelan ensembles are large, tuned bronze instruments played collectively — it's not background music you half-hear between food stalls. The outdoor setting inside the garden means you're hearing it among the redwoods and flowering beds, which changes it. Four years in, the programming has settled into something more intentional than a one-off novelty.

Practical notes: The garden is at 9th and Lincoln. Take the N-Judah to Carl & Cole or the 44 O'Shaughnessy to 9th Ave — there's street parking on Lincoln but it fills fast on weekends. Bring a layer; the microclimate by the east lawn runs cooler than the Sunset streets outside.

If you have two hours: get there at open, walk the New World Cloud Forest first while it's quieter, then position yourself near the performance space before the second set.
