Every Monday through Friday, 9–10am, the Japanese Tea Garden waives its admission fee — that's $13 normally, free if you show up before 10. Located at 75 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive inside Golden Gate Park, the garden runs year-round. No RSVP, no ticket, just get there on the early side. The N-Judah drops you at 9th and Irving; walk north through the park roughly 10 minutes. The 44 O'Shaughnessy also gets you close.
Meanwhile, the SF Botanical Garden — 55 acres at 1199 9th Avenue — offers free admission to SF residents on Memorial Day 2026, May 25. Bring proof of SF residency (a utility bill or ID with your address works). Hours are 7:30am–6pm. Non-residents pay $13 on that day, so if you're local, flag it on your calendar now.
The Tea Garden is compact enough that the free hour doesn't feel rushed — you can cover the pagoda, the koi pond, and the drum bridge in 45 minutes without sprinting. The Botanical Garden is the opposite: 55 acres means you'll graze the surface in two hours, so go in knowing what section you want. The Ancient Plant Garden and the California section near the main gate are the densest payoff per foot.
Navigation note: Google Maps has been routing drivers onto Chain of Lakes Drive inside the park, which has seen more congestion since the Great Highway closure. Use the outer roads or come by transit and skip it entirely.
With two hours, I'd do the Tea Garden on a weekday morning, exit by 10, and grab coffee on Irving before the neighborhood wakes up.
