Freight & Salvage in Berkeley is launching its first-ever Education Community Festival this Saturday, July 11, featuring free workshops, presentations, an Instrument Petting Zoo, and a mini-concert to showcase its educational programs.

Berkeley's beloved Freight & Salvage is set to host its inaugural Education Community Festival this Saturday, July 11, offering a free opportunity for families, educators, students, and music enthusiasts to explore the venue’s extensive educational programs. The festival kicks off at 12:00 p.m. with doors opening at 11:00 a.m. at 2020 Addison Street, Berkeley, wrapping up at 4:30 p.m.

This first-time event provides a rare look into The Freight's initiatives, which reach thousands annually. Attendees can participate in diverse workshops like "Singing for Fun!" with Zoe Ellis, a Country/Bluegrass Jam led by Richard Brandenburg, and "Roots Zydeco" with Dave Eagle and Craig Berletti. There will also be a "Hip-Hop is Folk Music" workshop presented by Najee Amaranth and Amani Jade. The festival also features presentations on the organization’s flagship "Golden State of Song" modules, focusing on the World War II Japanese internment and Indian music in California.

Beyond the workshops and presentations, the festival includes an Instrument Petting Zoo, offering a hands-on experience for budding musicians. The day culminates with a mini-concert by the Freight Singers at 4:00 p.m. While admission is free, registration is encouraged to help organizers manage attendance. The Freight is conveniently located just a few blocks from Downtown Berkeley BART station, making public transport an easy option. Street parking in downtown Berkeley can be challenging, so public transit or ride-sharing is recommended.

If you're planning to go, aim to arrive a bit before noon to get a good spot for the opening workshops, especially since specific registration details aren’t prominent and attendance might be first-come, first-served for some activities. The mini-concert by the Freight Singers is a solid way to close out the afternoon without committing to the full slate of activities. If you have an hour or two, drop in for a workshop that piques your interest and check out the Instrument Petting Zoo.
