The Hayward Animal Services Bureau at 16 Barnes Court has named a litter of five eight-week-old kittens after NBC Bay Area reporters and anchors, listing them for adoption as part of the network's annual Clear the Shelters drive.

At 16 Barnes Court in Hayward, five eight-week-old kittens are up for adoption under names borrowed from television: Janelle, Velena, Audrey, Marcus, and Kira, each named after a reporter or anchor at NBC Bay Area, which reported the promotion on July 25.

The naming ties to NBC Bay Area's annual "Clear the Shelters" adoption drive. In 2023, Hayward was among more than 40 Bay Area organizations that participated in the monthlong campaign; that year's Northern California effort logged nearly 4,300 adoptions, per NBC Bay Area.

The Barnes Court facility is a city-operated shelter under the Hayward Police Department's public services division. The city's volunteer orientation manual records a capacity of 110 cat cages and 83 dog runs. Dogs, rabbits, and other small animals are also listed for adoption.
