Silver Creek Community Market at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road has filed a WARN notice with the state, announcing 61 layoffs and a permanent closure by September 20 — leaving south San Jose's wealthiest enclave without its primary grocery store and a Blackstone-managed plaza without its anchor tenant.
At the corner of Silver Creek Valley Road and Beaumont Canyon Drive in south San Jose, Canyon Creek Plaza centers on one anchor: an organic grocery at the southeastern edge of the city. By September 20, that anchor will be gone.
Silver Creek Community Market, operated by Santa Cruz-based New Leaf Community Markets at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road, filed a WARN notice with the state last week announcing 61 layoffs and the permanent closure of the store. WARN notices — required when employers lay off 50 or more workers — carry no soft language: just a headcount and a date. New Leaf's count is 61. The date is September 20.
The filing marks the end of New Leaf's only San Jose location. The reason for the closure isn't officially on record. Neither New Leaf Community Markets nor Perform Properties — the management company that runs Canyon Creek Plaza — responded to requests for comment from SFGATE, which first reported the WARN notice. An employee at the store told the outlet the closure was tied to lease negotiations.
Canyon Creek Plaza, which spans 5601 to 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road, was purchased by San Diego-based real estate investment trust Retail Opportunity Investments Corp. in 2021. Blackstone has since acquired that REIT, with Perform Properties stepping in to manage the property. The management company's own marketing material described the grocery as the plaza's core draw: "This unique Silicon Valley property is anchored by New Seasons Market" — a DBA under which New Leaf has operated the Silver Creek location.
The market sits in one of San Jose's wealthier pockets. Silver Creek, on the city's southeastern edge, is a neighborhood of gated subdivisions, private golf, and a well-known country club. A leasing advertisement for the plaza put the average household income within a mile of the store at over $343,000. Alternatives in the area include the smaller Bonfare Market, and roughly three miles out, a Sprouts and a Walmart.
City Councilmember Domingo Candelas, whose district includes Silver Creek, said in a statement that he was "deeply concerned" and was working with city staff to "explore a path forward" for the soon-to-be-vacant storefront. "Access to groceries is essential in every neighborhood," Candelas said, "and this closure will have a real impact on our residents."
Perform Properties now has Canyon Creek Plaza's anchor slot to fill. By September 20, the space at 5667 Silver Creek Valley Road will be dark.
