The FDA added a new 72-case cyclospora cluster to its active investigations Wednesday — separate from the Taylor Farms lettuce outbreak — with no food source, no states, and no advisory disclosed. Unlike most foodborne pathogens, Cyclospora can't be traced with whole genome sequencing, and investigators are trying to isolate the cluster against thousands of circulating national cases.

The Food and Drug Administration added a new cyclospora cluster to its active investigation list late Wednesday — 72 cases, no identified food source, no states named, no product warning issued. The outbreak is explicitly separate from the larger Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce contamination, which has sickened 7,664 people across five states and prompted a recall, per Today.com and CDC officials.

The FDA currently has six active cyclospora outbreak investigations; the Taylor Farms cluster is the only one where investigators have confirmed a source, according to WHNT News. For the new 72-case cluster, officials have begun tracing an unidentified product through the supply chain but have not disclosed what that product is, where it was grown, or which states the patients are from. The agency has not said when the illnesses began or whether anyone has been hospitalized.

Part of the information gap traces to a diagnostic constraint the agency doesn't advertise. Whole genome sequencing — the technique that rapidly links cases to a contamination event in most foodborne illness investigations — isn't available for Cyclospora cayetanensis. "They have to use targeted genotyping, which is useful for detection but not as fast and precise as whole genome sequencing," Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC's Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases, told WHNT News. That slower method, applied against a background of thousands of circulating cases nationally, makes isolating a single 72-case cluster harder than the count suggests.

Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas said: "I want to stress that our investigation continues, including into other potential sources and commodities for other clusters of illness," per CIDRAP. A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson told the Associated Press: "This is an active investigation, and officials are working together to determine the specific cause of illnesses in this cluster."

The CDC has confirmed 4,173 laboratory-confirmed, domestically acquired cyclosporiasis cases across 41 states since May 1, 2026, per Food Safety News citing CDC data — a density that makes isolating any single cluster epidemiologically harder. New York City has reported more than 400 cases since May 1, with 93 percent of its full-year total arriving in that window, NBC New York reported; city health officials are separately investigating a common source.

The SF Chronicle reported that the San Francisco Department of Public Health is tracking at least one local cyclosporiasis case not part of the 72-case cluster; as of Thursday, SFDPH had not responded to the Chronicle's requests for comment.

The FDA has not issued a consumer advisory for the new cluster — a threshold the agency typically crosses once investigators can identify protective steps for the public. The 72 cases remain a count without a cause.

What to watch: whether the FDA discloses affected states or a food category before the traceback concludes, and whether case counts climb as the CDC's July 14 Health Alert Network notice — urging clinicians to order Cyclospora-specific testing that standard ova-and-parasite exams frequently miss — surfaces illnesses that previously went unreported.
