Contra Costa's vector-control district has beaten the invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito twice — in Martinez and in Concord — and lost to it once, in Antioch. Its newest detection, confirmed in Brentwood this month, will show which of those outcomes the county is headed for.

Contra Costa County's mosquito and vector-control agency says Aedes aegypti — a daytime-biting, container-breeding mosquito that can carry Zika, dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya — has turned up in Brentwood, the latest East County city to log the pest since it took hold in California. What makes Brentwood consequential isn't the detection itself but the timing: it lands three years into an Antioch infestation that routine inspection and larviciding have failed to end, and just weeks after the district rolled out an experimental sterile-male program because the old playbook stopped working. Whether Brentwood becomes a fast eradication or a second Antioch turns on how early the bug was caught and how far residents cooperate.

The district announced the Brentwood finding (external source, opens in a new tab) on Aug. 14. As in most prior cases, the insect surfaced not through the district's own trapping but through a resident who called for service; lab staff then set traps nearby and caught more. Surveillance will now widen to map how far the population has reached.

That dependence on tips is the whole ballgame, and district officials openly frame the Brentwood fight as a rerun of two very different pasts.

Scientific programs manager Steve Schutz said the earlier Martinez and Concord finds stayed penned into small pockets and were eliminated with neighbors' help. Antioch went the other way. By the time anyone flagged it there three years ago, the bug had already spread across a wide stretch of the city, Schutz said, and conventional inspections and treatments have not cleared it since.

The gap matters because Antioch has pushed the agency into tactics it had never run at scale locally. On June 12, crews sent trucks through an Antioch neighborhood grid for wide-area larvicide spraying (external source, opens in a new tab) — the sort of blanket chemical treatment reserved for an outbreak that has outrun door-to-door work. In July, officials went further, launching a pilot that releases lab-treated male mosquitoes (external source, opens in a new tab) carrying Wolbachia bacteria in a small section of Antioch. Those males don't bite and pose no risk to people; they mate with wild females whose eggs then fail to hatch. The district, which first detected the species in its territory in 2022, plans weekly releases from July through October and says it may expand the method if the trial works — a wager that it can thin out a population it can no longer inspect its way out of.

Brentwood is a chance to skip all of that, if the catch is early — and that is where the district is leaning on the public. General manager Dr. Paula Macedo tied the Martinez success to residents who reported bites, poured out standing water and let inspectors walk their yards, and said the agency needs "every resident's cooperation" in Brentwood now.

The asks are mundane. Because the mosquito breeds in trivial amounts of water, officials want people to tip out anything that holds it — a neglected pool, an untreated spa, a bucket, a plant saucer, a birdbath — to wear repellent with DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and to report daytime biters to the district at (925) 685-9301. County residents already fund the agency through property taxes, so inspections and service calls cost nothing extra.

The county has drawn this map before. Martinez and Concord are the version where a quick tip and open backyards end things in a few blocks. Antioch is the version where a three-year head start turns into spray trucks and lab-bred mosquitoes. Brentwood now sits somewhere on that line — and which end it lands on is being settled right now.
