Here's something we can get behind without any caveats about taxpayer dollars or city hall bloat: a free, community-driven wellness meetup for Black mothers in San Francisco.
Black Mama's Wellness Circle is a weekly gathering offering a space for Black moms to connect, decompress, and support each other — no government grant applications, no six-figure nonprofit executive salaries, no twelve-step approval process from the Board of Supervisors. Just people showing up for other people.
This is what community is supposed to look like.
We talk a lot in this space about the failures of top-down, bureaucracy-heavy social programs. San Francisco spends staggering amounts on wellness initiatives that often feel more like jobs programs for administrators than actual help for residents. So when something organic and grassroots pops up — something that runs on goodwill instead of line items — it's worth highlighting.
Maternal health outcomes for Black women remain significantly worse than for other demographics nationwide, and San Francisco is no exception despite its progressive branding. The city loves to throw money at disparities, but the most meaningful support often comes from within the community itself. A room full of moms who actually understand what you're going through is worth more than a hundred glossy city reports on equity.
The meetup is free and open to Black mothers in the San Francisco area on a weekly basis. If that's you, or someone you know, it's worth checking out.
And for the rest of us, it's a reminder that the best solutions don't always come with a budget memo attached. Sometimes they just come from people who care enough to show up.
