A woman was shot in the face in South Berkeley late Sunday night and homicide detectives are asking the public for help finding the shooter, who fled toward a nearby transit station.
The shooting happened on one of South Berkeley's main arterials just steps from the Ashby BART station — a block used daily by transit riders and shoppers. Police have no suspect in custody, and the victim's condition has stabilized, but the case remains open as investigators look for anyone who saw or heard something.
Officers responded to the 1900 block of Ashby Avenue, between Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Adeline Street, shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday after reports of gunfire, according to Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Officer Byron White, who confirmed the details in a statement reported by Berkeleyside.
When officers arrived, they were flagged down by the victim herself — a woman with a visible gunshot wound to the face. The Berkeley Fire Department transported her to a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition as of the initial report.
Police believe she was shot at the intersection of Ashby Avenue and Adeline Street. The shooter ran south from the scene, toward the Ashby BART station, White said.
The investigation has been assigned to the department's Homicide Unit — standard procedure for shootings in Berkeley regardless of whether the victim survives. No suspect has been publicly identified.
The incident occurred in a stretch of South Berkeley that sees considerable foot traffic. The Ashby BART station, just blocks away, is one of the neighborhood's main commuter anchors and is home to the long-running Ashby Flea Market on weekends.
Berkeley's overall violent crime numbers have been mixed in recent years. A March 2026 city report showed drops in property crime, but shootings remain a concern in South and Southwest Berkeley. A 21-year-old man was left in critical condition after a separate Southwest Berkeley shooting in April 2026, according to Berkeleyside.
The shooting was first reported by The Berkeley Scanner, a local public-safety outlet that monitors police radio traffic.
