The Gardens Festival has been running free outdoor programming here since 1993, and what keeps it functional rather than forgettable is the site itself: the upper lawn is shaded by trees on the east side by early afternoon, and the stage sightlines are clean from most of the grass. The Dance Outdoors series specifically has a following among people who want to move without committing to a studio — Rhythm & Motion is a real SF institution, not a one-off promotional thing.
If you have two hours: catch the choir set from the lawn with a sandwich from the Whole Foods on 4th Street two blocks away, then stay for the dance session if your legs are willing.
