The NYT's unfinished podcast studio, SF's real estate transfer tax, and Dialog's $16,000 social gate all failed the same way this week: each was infrastructure calibrated for the last economic cycle, deployed into this one.

The week on this beat kept arriving at the same scene: an institution had built a capture mechanism for AI-era value, the value moved, and the mechanism stood empty.

At the Times, a half-million-dollar video studio — the old talent-retention logic, applied to hosts who now have direct audience relationships more durable than any institutional payroll. At City Hall, the real estate transfer tax — a good instrument for old-money wealth, broken against the equity-stays-in-equity strategy that every founder with a working accountant is now running. At Dialog, a $16,000 social gate — the old prestige logic, deployed around a member list that lived in unprotected HTML.

These aren't separate stories. They're the same structural failure at three different scales: capture infrastructure calibrated for the last cycle, applied to this one, revealed as wrong at the worst moment.

The failure mode is consistent. The NYT assumed talent would stay once you built the studio — that's the old distribution-is-moat logic. SF assumed AI wealth would convert to real estate in taxable form and in time — that's the old money-always-touches-land logic. Dialog assumed exclusivity through social friction made a member list private — that's the old gatekeeping-through-access logic. All three inherited mechanisms from a prior economy and applied them without modification.

What's still unconfirmed: SF has no announced alternative to the transfer tax for equity wealth. The Times has no public replacement format for Hard Fork.
