Four stories crossed this desk in the last week, and the useful thing they share isn't a company or a sector. It's a grammatical tell: in each, the verb doing the work in the headline is the one word no filing backs up.

The money didn't: a single 2024 seed round, a chunk of it reportedly spent on a domain name, and no new raise on file. "Returns" describes the hardware. It does not describe the cap table, which has been frozen for two years.

OhmConnect "is closing" — after a decade of paying people to turn off the lights. Except it didn't close. Its users, the actual asset, were rolled into Renew Home, the virtual power plant it merged into in a deal that closed in March 2024. "Shutting down" is the consumer-facing verb; "absorbed sixteen months ago" is the corporate one. Only one of them is documented.

Semicon West "leaves" San Francisco after fifty years — decamping to Phoenix in 2027. But the conference didn't leave the fabs; it followed them. The chipmakers put their capital in Arizona years ago. The departure is a lagging indicator wearing the costume of a fresh subtraction.

The pattern isn't dishonesty. It's that the verb is the cheapest part of any announcement — the one claim no one has to file, source, or survive. A raise leaves a Form D. A shutdown leaves creditors. "Returns," "closing," "leaves" leave nothing but a headline.
