Found negatives said to show the old Fremont Dragstrip — later Baylands Raceway, now paved into the Pacific Commons shopping complex — resurfaced on a Bay Area subreddit this week, a brief return for a quarter-mile strip that ran from 1959 to 1988.

There is nothing at 44333 Christy Street in Fremont that would tell you a quarter-mile of drag racing once ran through it. The address now sits inside Pacific Commons, the big-box retail complex Catellus Development built out on the old land in the mid-1990s, in the flat quadrant just south of where Interstate 880 meets Auto Mall Parkway. If you drove it today you would see parking lots and storefronts. What you would not see is the Fremont Dragstrip.

It came back this week the way vanished places tend to — sideways, through a stranger's find. On the r/bayarea subreddit, a user posting as cream-of-cow shared a set of photographs said to show the old strip, crossposted from r/foundphotos, where the original poster reported having bought the negatives. The Dissent has not independently examined the images; the thread, modest at fifteen upvotes, pointed readers to the track's Wikipedia entry and let the pictures do the rest.

The strip they point back to was, for a stretch of the Bay Area's motoring life, hard to miss. It opened in 1959 on land leased from the Southern Pacific Railroad — ground the Navy had used for a wartime airfield — and by the early 1970s its radio ads were a fixture on Bay Area pop stations. Evel Knievel jumped ten Mack trucks there on April 13, 1974. Hollywood used it: John Milner races at the strip in the 1979 film More American Graffiti. In its last years it operated as part of Baylands Raceway Park, hosting the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals from 1981 to 1983, before closing at the end of 1988.

The gliderport that had shared the site went quiet, and by 1996 the parcel had become the shopping complex and, nearby, the Nueva School.

What a person walking the lot tomorrow would notice is nothing at all — which is rather the point of a box of negatives surfacing thirty-plus years on.
