Tau Robotics launched an invite-only $30/hour humanoid home-cleaning service in San Francisco this week — but the CEO concedes a human teleoperator drives each robot, with AI only assisting. The company is pre-seed, its funding undisclosed, and every cleaning visit doubles as training-data collection.
A San Francisco startup called Tau Robotics went public this week with an invite-only home-cleaning service priced at $30 an hour, delivered by humanoid robots. The catch, stated plainly by co-founder and CEO Alexander Koch: today's AI can't run one of these machines on its own. A human teleoperator drives it from a central location, with AI handling balance and motor control. "Each humanoid is jointly controlled by a human operator and AI," Koch wrote in the July 28 launch announcement. The robot cleaning your kitchen is, functionally, a person with an extra step.
The cap-table reality is early-stage. Tau was founded in 2024 by Koch, a TU Munich computer-science grad, and Cornelia Weinzierl. Its only confirmed financing is a pre-seed round led by SF firm Pebblebed — whose partners include ex-OpenAI founding engineer Pamela Vagata — with the amount undisclosed. A lone Crunchbase-attributed figure of roughly $3 million is single-sourced, and no Form D for "Tau Robotics" appears in EDGAR's full-text filing index as of Thursday. No 2026 raise has been announced. The hardware itself is a Unitree platform with Tau's own cameras and grippers bolted on — not a robot Tau built from the ground up.
Worth naming what the business actually is. Per Tau's own materials, every visit records head- and wrist-camera video, depth data, and operator input logs — training data for what Koch calls "a general AI for robots." The paying customers are the data-collection layer. Ken Goldberg, a UC Berkeley roboticist with 40 years in the field, told ABC7 it's "too early," and cautioned that sped-up demo videos can't tell you whether a human was behind the scenes or the room was staged just so. Koch's counter is narrower than the pitch: vacuuming and wiping a counter are "pretty doable," he said — not "clean an entire home."
This is the teleoperation-first playbook now common in Bay Area robotics, from delivery bots with remote safety drivers to VR-piloted fighting robots: ship a human in the loop, call it autonomy-adjacent, and collect the data that might someday remove the human. Whether it gets there is the open question.
What to watch: whether a funding round actually gets filed, an operator headcount Tau won't disclose — an unverified claim of "250 operators" is circulating — and whether the economics of one paid human per robot ever pencil out against the house cleaner the robot is standing in for.
