Let's state the obvious: distracted driving is stupid everywhere, but it's especially stupid in a tunnel barely wide enough for two lanes of traffic separated by your imagination and a painted line. The Stockton Tunnel connects Union Square to Chinatown and sees heavy foot and vehicle traffic throughout the day. There's no shoulder. There's no room to swerve. If you lose focus for two seconds, you're hitting something — a wall, another car, or worse, a pedestrian at the tunnel entrance.

San Francisco already has a Vision Zero program that was supposed to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024. That deadline came and went. Pedestrian deaths remain stubbornly high, and distracted driving enforcement is virtually nonexistent. SFPD has bigger fish to fry, apparently, and the city's approach to traffic safety leans heavily on infrastructure tweaks — speed bumps, bollards, painted curbs — rather than holding individual drivers accountable for reckless behavior.

Infrastructure matters. But no amount of redesigned intersections can fix someone scrolling Instagram at 30 mph in a concrete tube.
