If you're around this holiday weekend and have a spare corner of the living room, House Rabbit Society's Richmond center will match you with a shelter rabbit for a two-week foster — no experience required, all supplies included.

House Rabbit Society is making a timely ask for the holiday weekend: if you're home anyway, take a foster rabbit with you.

The pitch makes practical sense during the 4th. Shelter rabbits are prey animals with sensitive hearing — a kennel full of faraway booms is its own kind of misery. A foster home, even a first-timer's apartment, is a real upgrade. HRS is accepting foster applications from across the nine-county Bay Area for the holiday window and beyond.

The commitment is a two-week minimum, and HRS handles the heavy lift. Pickup is at their center at 148 Broadway in Richmond, just north of Berkeley, and they send you home with everything: an x-pen, litter box, bedding, food pellets, hay, and bowls. You cover the fresh vegetables, which runs roughly $5 to $10 a week. No rabbit experience required — HRS will match you to a beginner-appropriate animal, and a free Rabbit Care 101 Zoom class is available before you pick up. For anyone who wants more of a challenge, they're also actively looking for fosters for shy, medicated, or behavior rabbits that need extra socialization.

Active fosters get a 15% discount at the HRS Hop Shop if you want to stock up on toys or treats.

Apply at houserabbit.org/foster, or email foster@houserabbit.org with questions. You can also call (510) 970-7575 during business hours.

If you only have two hours this weekend: Submit the application now — it takes ten minutes — and you could have a rabbit in your living room before the fireworks start Friday night.
