Everyone brings something from a list: fresh OJ, a vegan charcuterie board, maybe a guitar. They'll paint, sip coffee from their favorite mugs, and actually talk to each other like human beings.
This is what community looks like when you strip away the bureaucracy.
No one applied for a grant. No one formed a 501(c)(3). No one hired a "community engagement consultant" at $200 an hour. Someone just said, "Hey, let's meet at the park Saturday morning," and people are signing up.
The details are charmingly analog. Bring your own blanket. Share why your coffee mug is your favorite. If you bail, let the group know so someone else can take your spot. There's even a minimum headcount threshold — if they don't hit 50%, they reschedule. That's more fiscal discipline than most city departments exercise.
We talk a lot in this column about what's broken in San Francisco — the spending, the dysfunction, the layers of government that seem designed to make simple things impossible. But moments like this are worth celebrating precisely because they remind us what works. Voluntary association. Personal responsibility. People solving their own problems (in this case, the problem of not knowing your neighbors).
San Francisco doesn't need another $5 million "social cohesion initiative." It needs ten people, a park, some watercolors, and someone willing to bring the orange juice.
