Attendees at San Francisco's 56th annual Pride celebration on June 29 had their water bottles seized at security checkpoints — and the organizers' defense that eight refill stations kept crowds hydrated is being flatly contradicted by people who searched the grounds and found none.

SF Pride enforced a no-outside-liquid policy at Civic Center Plaza while its own website gave contradictory guidance on what was allowed — and its post-event statement claiming adequate water infrastructure doesn't match what dozens of Reddit users reported in real time, including one person who says the confiscation policy may have violated the ADA.

Attendees at San Francisco's 56th annual Pride celebration arrived at Civic Center Plaza on June 29 expecting a sun-drenched afternoon — temperatures hit the mid-70s — and discovered their water bottles weren't welcome.

Security staff at the Union Plaza entrance confiscated filled water bottles, and some attendees were told empty bottles weren't allowed either, despite SF Pride's own website stating as of the Friday before the event that "sealed water bottles and empty bottles were allowed," according to SFGate, which confirmed the language via the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.

Photos of dozens of bottles lined up against the entrance circulated on Reddit shortly after the event. SF Pride appeared to update its Safety and Security webpage multiple times after Sunday — first adding language permitting "empty reusable plastic/metal water flasks and sealed plastic water bottles under 1L," then by Tuesday morning banning glass and metal containers outright.

Organizers: Eight Stations, Plenty of Water

On Tuesday afternoon, SF Pride sent SFGate a statement defending the policy. "Our water policy reflected standard practice for any large festival with secured gates: attendees were permitted to bring in empty water bottles, but not full containers of liquid," it read. The statement said eight refill stations were set up across the site, that only one ran out, and that "two teams of ambassadors" moved through the grounds handing out free water.

"We recognize we could have done a better job with our language and communication, and we're committed to improving that ahead of next year's event," organizers added.

That account clashed with what crowds reported experiencing. Reddit user /u/DJ_RichardMixon, whose post was linked by SFGate, wrote that their group walked the entire festival footprint — including the 18+ section and the Fairie area near the main library branch — "at one point intentionally looking for water dispensers which were nowhere in site." A member of their group was told to surrender her water bottle, poured it out, declined, and walked in. "Could we have missed one of them? Sure," the post read. "Could we have missed eight? Highly unlikely."

Other Reddit users reported vendors selling water bottles ran out around 3:15 p.m. "So we went home," one user wrote. "Really upsetting and dangerous how the hydration aspect was handled today, especially considering the weather."

An ADA Angle

One attendee raised a sharper legal concern. "I had my own experience trying to get in with my water bottle, which I need to take medications I may need on short notice, and they made me dump it out," a Reddit user told SFGate. "And, under ADA, that's a violation." The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that public events provide people with disabilities "full and equal" enjoyment of services and accommodations; because water is considered a basic necessity, venues covered by the ADA cannot deny people access to it, SFGate noted.

SF Pride did not respond to SFGate's request for comment before initial publication. The city of San Francisco also did not reply.

The event carried the theme "Resistance in Action" and was attended by large crowds at what organizers billed as the 56th annual celebration. Whether the water access failures were a logistical breakdown or a policy communicated poorly — or both — SF Pride has now committed to revisiting both before 2027.
