826 Valencia is the nonprofit writing and tutoring center that Dave Eggers helped found, and the scavenger hunt is the kind of thing they do well: structured enough to hold a seven-year-old's attention, loose enough that adults aren't bored. The pirate supply shop (yes, it sells lard, eye patches, and masts) is part of the experience and worth ten minutes on its own. The hunt itself runs through the space and, depending on the version, spills out toward the neighborhood. No food on-site, but there's a taqueria stretch on 24th Street two blocks south if you need to fuel up or wind down.
Getting there: 24th Street BART is a four-minute walk. Street parking on Valencia on weekends is possible but not guaranteed — try the side streets east toward Guerrero. Free, all ages, no registration required based on past runs, but confirm on their site.
If you've got two hours: do the hunt, browse the shop, then walk the 24th Street corridor for a snack. That's the full loop.
