Limited housing supply continues to push San Francisco real estate costs skyward, and at this point the only reasonable reaction is the one offered by a local on Reddit: "In other Breaking News — Water is Wet!"

But here's the thing about obvious problems: they only stay obvious because nobody fixes them. San Francisco has spent decades layering bureaucratic approvals, environmental reviews, and neighborhood vetoes on top of every housing proposal that dares to exist. The result? A city where a modest one-bedroom apartment costs more than a house in most of America, and where even tech salaries can feel like they're barely keeping up.

The math isn't complicated. Demand for housing in one of the most desirable cities on earth continues to climb. Supply doesn't. Prices go up. Repeat forever.

As one frustrated SF resident put it: "Build. More. Housing. All of it. Tax the rich to subsidize BMR units. Up-zone to allow market-rate unit economics to pencil for developers with no subsidies. Do it all. Everywhere."

That's not a radical position — it's Econ 101. Yet San Francisco's political establishment has historically treated new housing like a threat rather than a solution. Every unit blocked by permitting delays or killed by NIMBY opposition is another family priced out of the city. Every "community input" process that stretches approvals from months into years is a hidden tax on future residents.

To be fair, there are signs of progress. State-level reforms have started to chip away at local obstruction, and recent streamlining efforts have made it slightly easier to build. But "slightly easier" in San Francisco still means brutally difficult anywhere else.

The fiscally responsible path forward isn't complicated: reduce the regulatory burden that makes building expensive, let the market respond to demand, and target subsidies narrowly at those who genuinely need them. What we can't afford is another decade of hand-wringing while housing costs consume an ever-larger share of residents' incomes.

Stop studying the problem. Start building the solution — literally.
