Investigators completing a second search at 1603 Sandy Prairie Road in Fortuna recovered 117 intact canine carcasses, 21 skulls, and more than 600 dog collars from a barn believed to have served as a kill site — expanding the physical record at Miranda's Rescue as a multi-agency fraud and cruelty investigation enters its third month with no charges filed.
Investigators completing a second search warrant at 1603 Sandy Prairie Road in Fortuna recovered 117 intact canine carcasses, 21 skulls, and hundreds of additional bones from the property of Miranda's Rescue, the Humboldt County animal organization at the center of a multi-agency fraud and cruelty investigation, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.
The operation used ground-penetrating radar to identify soil anomalies across several areas of the property before excavating multiple locations. Cal Poly Humboldt's anthropology department assisted in the dig. USDA forensic veterinarians and a private forensic specialist examined 70 of the 117 recovered dogs on-site; preliminary findings showed many carried bullet fragments. The remaining 47 were transported as evidence but not examined in the field due to time constraints. Investigators also documented an additional cluster of canine remains in a separate area of the property that were too decomposed to excavate.
Inside a barn on the property, investigators identified an area they believe was used as a kill site. More than 600 dog collars were recovered from that location. Several loose microchips were also pulled from the excavation sites; analysts are now working to match them to individual animals. Most of the 117 intact dogs were also chipped.
About 900 dogs were transferred to the rescue since January 2025, according to the sheriff's office — including hundreds from Oakland Animal Services and Berkeley Animal Care Services, as The Dissent has reported. Records confirm only 116 adoptions; more than 730 animals remain unaccounted for.
No charges have been filed. The sheriff's office has scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon in Eureka. "This investigation is just getting started," Sheriff William Honsal said.
