Safeway's sticker prices are genuinely absurd unless you create an account and religiously use their app — which, by all accounts, is a clunky marketing tool masquerading as a shopping assistant. But here's the libertarian gut-check: this is what happens when a business coasts on location density instead of competing on quality. Trader Joe's, Costco, and even Walmart are eating Safeway's lunch precisely because they deliver a straightforward value proposition. You walk in, the prices are the prices, and nobody's asking you to download an app to unlock the "real" cost of chicken thighs.
Safeway isn't failing because of San Francisco's retail challenges — it's failing because it treats its own customers like an inconvenience. In a free market, that's a death sentence. The locked shelves are just the metaphor writing itself.
