San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Friday that William Ohlson, 33, of Reno, Nevada, has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly entering a bank ATM vestibule in the 1800 block of Market Street and violently torturing a small kitten to death on July 1.

The charges, which include killing, maiming, or abusing an animal; overdrive, overwork, or overload of an animal; and resisting, obstructing, or delaying a peace officer, stem from a joint investigation by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and Animal Care and Control.

Police responded to the incident on July 1 after receiving reports of an individual with a kitten inside an ATM vestibule. Prosecutors allege that Ohlson, once inside, subjected the animal to extreme violence, "and proceeded to violently torture the animal to death," according to statements from the District Attorney's Office. The incident sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and prompted a swift response from law enforcement.

On Tuesday, police served a search warrant at a hotel in the 100 block of Fell Street where officers had tracked Ohlson. When police learned he had fled to the roof, the San Francisco Fire Department provided a truck and ladder to help apprehend Ohlson, the District Attorney's Office confirmed.

In a statement regarding the charges, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins emphasized the commitment to holding perpetrators of animal cruelty accountable.
