ROAR Strength Training Gym opened at 2301 Ocean Ave in August 2025, adding to an Ingleside fitness corridor anchored by the 24 Hour Fitness at 1850 Ocean — which itself went through a renovation and a childcare-to-kickboxing conversion — and pointed toward a climbing gym slated for 2027.

At 2301 Ocean Avenue, a women-focused strength training gym called ROAR opened in August 2025, co-founded by Michelle Kunkel and Meghan Basmajian. It sits about four blocks west of the 24 Hour Fitness at 1850 Ocean Avenue — the gym that, for incoming Ingleside residents, tends to be the first stop and, for many, a frustrating one: the floor runs crowded, and there is no dedicated off-street parking on that stretch of the avenue.

The two addresses now bracket a corridor that has accumulated fitness options faster than most Ingleside residents seem to have noticed. The 24 Hour Fitness at 1850 Ocean went through a recent renovation adding new equipment, a turf training zone, a dedicated squat rack area, and a Recovery24 recovery spa, according to The Ingleside Light. Inside the same building, the gym also converted its former Kids' Club childcare center into a 9Round kickboxing studio — a 30-minute, nine-station circuit franchise. A building permit issued in mid-December 2019 covered the conversion: removal of existing wall and floor finishes, five new electrical outlets, and a room-use change from "childcare" to "exercise." The reason for closing the childcare program, per a notice 24 Hour Fitness posted on the Kids' Club door: "While Kids' Club has historically been offered at this location, overall usage has been low... we made the decision to permanently close Kids' Club at this location."

When 9Round was first announced, Ahmad Murad, who owns Fog Lifter Cafe on the same commercial strip, told The Ingleside Light he welcomed the addition. "I think it's good," Murad said. "It's good that this area is becoming more sporty, especially with St. Clair's Taekwondo opening up a few months ago."

More is still incoming. Touchstone Climbing is developing Aisle 19, a climbing gym near Alemany Boulevard, with an early 2027 target, according to The Ingleside Light. "Aisle 19 is being thoughtfully designed to be more than just a climbing gym," marketing director Heather Bellgreen told the outlet.

What the K-line stop at CCSF doesn't solve is the parking gap — the gym at 1850 Ocean is steps from the pedestrian bridge stop, transit-convenient and car-inconvenient in equal measure. ROAR at 2301 Ocean is a different proposition: smaller, focused, with named owners. Whether it draws overflow from the bigger gym down the street or builds its own clientele from scratch is the kind of thing a block figures out on its own.
