If you've walked past Page Street near Octavia recently, you may have noticed some eye-catching art on a gate — the kind of thing that makes you stop, snap a photo, and maybe scan a QR code out of curiosity. Street art in San Francisco isn't exactly rare, but this particular installation comes with a catch that's less "support local artists" and more "surrender your biometric data to a crypto company."

One curious SF resident decided to throw caution to the wind and punch in their phone number. What they got back was an invite to a "Humans Only Concert" at The Midway, featuring a secret lineup and a "9X Grammy Winning Artist." Free tickets, 21+ event, doors at 8 PM. Sounds pretty great on paper.

But here's where it gets interesting — and by interesting, we mean dystopian. As another local put it bluntly: "It's a Worldcoin crypto marketing play. Have to let one of their orbs harvest your biometric data to get tickets. That's a pass for me."

For the uninitiated, Worldcoin — now rebranded simply as "World" — is the Sam Altman-backed project that wants to scan your iris with a silver orb in exchange for cryptocurrency tokens and a digital identity. The pitch is that in an age of AI, we need to prove we're human. The reality is you're handing over some of the most sensitive biometric information you have to a venture-backed company with uncertain data practices.

Wrapping that proposition in guerrilla street art and free concert tickets is genuinely clever marketing. We'll give them that. But let's call it what it is: a customer acquisition funnel disguised as culture.

San Francisco has long been the testing ground for Silicon Valley's boldest — and most invasive — ideas. We're used to being the beta users. But there's something particularly grating about co-opting the aesthetic of grassroots street art to lure people into a biometric data exchange. At least when Big Tech takes your data through an app, you know what you're signing up for. When it's painted on a gate in Hayes Valley, the line between art and advertising disappears entirely.

Free concert tickets are nice. Your iris scan is forever. Choose accordingly.
