Gov. Gavin Newsom released four years of tax returns Friday — his first disclosure since 2022 — after years of not honoring a pledge to publish them, and as he and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom sit under a federal investigation.
The numbers are unremarkable for a wealthy governor; the timing is the story. Newsom opened his books only after a reported federal investigation turned his household finances into a political liability and years after promising annual disclosure — a sequence that makes when he disclosed as newsworthy as what the returns contain.
According to the San Francisco Standard, Newsom released the returns as the Department of Justice has reportedly launched an investigation against the couple, and after he faced media criticism in 2024 for pledging to release his returns and then failing to do so. The Standard also reported that Newsom is likely to mount a 2028 presidential campaign.
Newsom released a batch of tax documents Friday covering 2021 through 2024, the San Francisco Standard reported — the first time the governor has made his taxes public since 2022.
The disclosure came with a message aimed squarely at Washington. "Governor Newsom is the first Governor in California history to publicly release tax returns covering his tenure in office," spokesperson Izzy Gardon said in a statement to the Standard, noting that Newsom has placed his assets in a blind trust and signed a day-one order barring state agencies from doing business with his companies. "Meanwhile, Donald Trump is openly cashing in on the presidency... The contrast is glaring, and the double standard is absurd."
The figures were modest by the standard of a multimillionaire governor. The Standard reported the Newsoms earned between $1.7 million and $2 million a year from 2022 through 2024. More than $1 million of the 2024 total came from investments; Newsom's state salary was $192,000 and Siebel Newsom's income was $148,000, with the rest flowing from his blind-trust businesses and her production firm. In 2021, the couple earned roughly $1 million after a real estate transaction, according to the Standard.
None of that is the story. The story is the timing.
The Standard reported that Republican critics have accused Newsom of using his office for personal enrichment, and that Friday's disclosure was meant to ward off those accusations. Newsom has denied any financial wrongdoing and accused President Donald Trump of concealing his own wealth by refusing to release his returns. The Dissent reported in June that the federal probe centers on Siebel Newsom's taxes and the nonprofits and business she runs.
The release also arrives late. The Standard noted Newsom faced criticism in 2024 for pledging to release his tax returns and then failing to do so. The paperwork resurfaced only once a federal investigation, as the Standard reported, made his finances a political question — not on the schedule he had promised voters.
And it answers a narrower question than the probe poses. As The Dissent reported in June, the investigation centers on Siebel Newsom's nonprofits and business dealings — subjects a joint personal income-tax return does not resolve.
